If you are new to Bali, seeing a gecko running across the wall or ceiling of your villa can be surprising. You may even wonder: are geckos in Bali dangerous?
For most people, the answer is no. The small house geckos commonly seen around Bali homes are generally harmless and are a normal part of the tropical environment. They often live around buildings because they can find shelter and plenty of insects to eat.
Are House Geckos Dangerous?
The small geckos commonly found on walls and ceilings are not generally considered a threat to people. They are insect-eating animals and can actually help reduce the number of mosquitoes, moths, flies and other insects around a property.
Seeing an occasional gecko inside a villa does not necessarily mean that you have a pest infestation. Ecoforpest explains that occasional sightings of geckos and other small animals are normal in Bali’s tropical homes, particularly where properties have open terraces, gardens or partially open living spaces.
If you are seeing more geckos than usual, there may also be more insects available for them to feed on. During periods of heavy rain, for example, increased insect activity can make geckos more visible around lights, windows and outdoor areas.
What About Tokay Geckos?
Not every gecko in Bali is the small house gecko. You may also encounter the much larger Tokay gecko, locally known as tokek.
Tokay geckos are generally beneficial insect-eating animals, but they should be treated differently from small house geckos. They can deliver a strong bite if they are cornered, grabbed or otherwise threatened. For this reason, trying to catch a Tokay by hand is not recommended.

Should You Remove Geckos From Your Bali Villa?
Usually, there is no need to remove a gecko simply because you have seen one.
However, the situation may be different if geckos are appearing frequently, entering bedrooms, leaving droppings in sensitive areas, or becoming difficult to manage around your property.
It is also worth looking at why they are there. High insect activity, open access points and the design of tropical properties can all contribute to increased gecko activity.
